I'm sure most of you know the story behind SMB2: the game "Super Mario Bros. 2" most people played is actually not the direct follow-up to the first "Super Mario Bros." on the NES. The "true" sequel to Super Mario Bros. was considered to be too difficult for players worldwide, or at least that's how the story goes, so it was only released in Japan. They then took an existing game called "Doki Doki Panic", inserted the appropriate Mario characters and called it "Super Mario Bros. 2" worldwide. Since this game was never intended to be turned into a sequel to a Mario game, there's little or no connection to the original: the enemies are all different and so is the way you kill them, the level layout is different, the way you find powerups is different, the bosses are different ! It feels like the characters from the Mario franchise crossed over into a different realm ! One thing that's kinda cool is that you can play as other characters, not just Mario: at the start of each level, you can select between Mario, Luigi, Toadstool and Princess Peach. Luigi jumps the highest and can leap over long gaps but he's the slowest runner, Toad and Mario are the fastest runners but can't jump as high as Luigi and Princess Peach can hover in the air for a while after jumping by holding down the A button. Personally, I like to use Luigi the most, even though he's slower than the others - I find his high jumping to be the most useful ability. There are 7 worlds with 3 levels each, with the exception of the last world which has only 2. At the end of each level you'll fight a pink dinosaur named Birdo in order to collect the crystal ball it guards which grants you access to the next level. At the end of each world you fight a main boss, the last one being a frog named Wart, the equivalent of Bowser in this game. The way you fight the enemies is also radically different. For starters, Mario doesn't stomp the enemies like in SMB. In fact, you can even ride on the back of an enemy and it will carry you along ! The fire flower is also absent from SMB2, so you're unable to fire any projectiles, so how do you fight these guys ? You throw stuff at them ! This includes vegetables and other random items you pluck from the ground where you see tufts of grass. You can even pick up the enemies themselves for the same purpose ! The game may not have much connection to the original, but it's still a fun and addicting experience, even to this day. You definitely should give this one a shot, it's worth it just for the amusement factor. Try it out !
