Book Discussion 19: Rainbow in the Mist by Phyllis A. Whitney
In this mystery story that includes elements of the supernatural, or however else you categorize psychic abilities, the story follows the reluctant psychic Christy. I would point out that the story treats all of the psychic powers it describes as wholly genuine, which is helpful in trying to parse together events. Christy's trepidation towards her abilities has led to them behaving helter-skelter and without her being able to control them. This serves as an excuse for the culprit in the mystery to keep eluding her, but taken as a whole the events in the story are muddled and confusing. Even after reading the entire story, and guessing what theoretically took place, it still doesn't add up or make sense. The unexpected and unforeseeable nature of the culprit was also rather frustrating, as there were some believable false leads (that in my perspective would be more reasonable). I would say that was the one positive of the story. The author seemed pretty good at creating misleading false trails, which would have been interesting in a more grounded mystery.
The reviews were mostly positive, but it seems you either really enjoyed this book or quite disliked it. I fell into the less popular latter in this case. Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/Rainbow-Mist-Phyllis-Whitney/dp/0449217426
