No commentary playthrough of Bram Stoker's Dracula for DOS based PCs. Using DOSBox-X. Game has no difficulty settings.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a first person puzzle/adventure/shooter, developed by TAG studio and published by Psygnosis (damn you guys! I used to love your stuff) in 1993. You play as Jonathan Harker in a quest to debunk Dracula and save your beloved Mina. Game was notorious for requiring to aim a shooting reticle onscreen aside from moving in a fps fashion through the world. Game has a CD version, but the ISO weights the same as the floppy version.

Game is not super bad, but it's definetly not good either. Your objective is to "purge" all the coffins in each one of the three level by dropping a consecrated waffle on it to spawn a manifestation of Dracula, defeat it, and be able to progress to the next level. These coffins also work as monsters spawners in a "Gauntlet" style, although only one monster from each coffin can be up at any given time. There are also lots of puzzles using any combination of touchplates, switches and keys on the way... Puzzles with range from nice, to rightfully devious, but they are well designed, I didn't manage to break any of them.

The engine is meh, with motion that looks like it moves at 15fps max and has depth cueing for a creepy dark fog. and even with those compromises the game's viewport is very small, with a huge frame taking a big part of the screen. Sound is very basic, with probably not more than a dozen sound effects. Music also adds to the overall creepiness of the game, but that creepines is completely ruined with a victorious musical fanfare every time you beat an enemy or purge a coffin. Monster variety is completely non existant, they have a few different looks but they're all the same, only difference is their toughness (1, 2 or 3 shots). There's no weapon variety at all, just a weak knife and a hand pistol. You have a limited inventory to carry ammo, keys and food.

It's one of those games where missing something will have you wandering for hours, wondering what to do next. This is aggravated by the fact that if you managed to miss a pack of waffles, you won't be able to purge the monster spawners and you will run out of resources. Also it has some touchplates that will turn your character 180º, which is super annoying given the slow turn speed.
