Conkers means chestnuts in England. Put simply they are simply fruits of the chestnut tree.

Chestnuts fall at the end of September and it is for that reason that the season of the conkers season begins in early autumn.

Believe it or not, this timeless childhood past-time is now banned from many schools in the UK for health and safety reasons but in a recent survey, it was voted the greatest playground game of all time.


So, as a celebration of this, a new conker competition has developed, vegetable conkers. Played under the same rules as the traditional game the “veg” is a lot more explosive and messy. The best weapons of destruction are potatoes, swede and onion.
