It has the familiar hum of a lawnmower yet it is more at home cutting the waves rather than the grass.

The amateur inventor has come up with an intriguing solution to the problem of getting his boating equipment from house to boat in a totally seamless fashion.

He has created the ‘Shortcutter’ made from a sit-on lawnmower and an old boat to form an ingenious amphibious craft.

He can now transport himself and any equipment straight from the garage using the road and then take straight to the water to reach his boat. He may only cruise along the roads at 6 mph, but as a road user, the vehicle is taxed although he had to seek advice from the authorities regarding its classification for tax purposes.

The retired insurance broker who spent around two years making the machine with his late friend Laurie Mayhead has already been in touch with leading lawnmower maker Honda about mass production of his vehicle. They have kindly declined his offer.

It may not have the style of a James Bond Q invention but when you see it simply slips into the water and continue its journey it certainly has the wow factor!
