British Legends: The Class 40 Diesel Locomotive (D306)
The British Class 40 Diesel Electric Locomotive (originally known as the "Type 4" locomotive) was introduced into traffic back in 1958 and 200 Class 40 locomotives were built from 1958 to 1962 at the Vulcan Works in Warrington. These locomotives have a top speed of 90mph (145kph) and they can work on both passenger and freight duties as many of the class have steam heating output for use on the BR Mark 1 and the Mark II passenger stock respectively. The power unit used on the Class 40 is the English Electric 16SVT turbo-charged unit with a power range of 2000hp with a wheel configuration of "1-Co-Co-1" which three of the four axles are powered. Most of the early batch of Class 40's were only vacuum-braked but a number of Class 40's were fitted with dual-brakes to allow compatibility with the newer air-braked rolling stock.
