BTA3062-13.2.2- Wreck Mechs, Collect Checks™! Part 1 - Hunting for Heavies. The Battles of Hell an
In the hunt for bigger mechs, we went to a planet where Wolf and Jade Falcon were battling. Quarrel perhaps? But this led to what I started thinking of "The Battle of Hell and Heaven".
There was a relatively simple-LOOKING assassination mission rated two skulls by the Review Board. Simple enough. But what it WAS, was more than a full Jade Falcon trinary, with three and a half stars of Clan mechs, 100 ton heavy tanks, and a few garrison and Solama SLDF second line mechs. Very dangerous, since our heaviest mechs were 50 tonners, mostly Inner Sphere. We opened up a can on the first two outer pickets... but they just kept coming, star after star. And the final assassination target was a 70 ton Summoner. It felt like the final raid boss of a long and hard raid.
I should have called it after we cracked the first Star or two, but I felt like it was just at the edge of our capabilities. Which it was. We lost something like three mechs along the way, but had just enough to dive in and rough up the target diplomat- who ejected to live another day. We didn't have enough gas to safely polish off the target's bodyguards, so we did a mixture of running to extraction and simply ejecting. Somehow, no one died, but there were a lot of injuries and roughed up mechs. The Griffin and and Centurion were 18-19 days to repair, and of course we lost the C3I module we took from Word of Blake. The final salt might be that although we brought down the Summoner, it was too shot up for a complete salvage, and I didn't spend enough salvage shares to get a full Black Lanner we dropped early on.
But weirdly enough, fate was kind after that. The very next mission, Jade Falcon apparently upped our security threat rating and bid a lot higher in our next mission. A binary, but there were something like five 70ish ton mechs- A Timber Wolf that we brought down clean early on, which was nice to know it was waiting for us. Then several Night Gyrs and Summoners. Enough to be dangerous, but we were able to outmaneuver them on a flat central field, and we had just enough fire in the form of Inferno Artillery that we were able to pile on their heat problems made worse by the desert environment they weren't used to. Although we somewhat shot up again, this time salvage worked out perfectly. We spent shares to claim the Timber Wolf guaranteed, but also got a full Summoner and a Night Gyr out of it, plus even more pieces.
The battle after that, the Jade Falcons were very offended by the presence of the iconic Timber Wolf in our freebirth hands and focused fire on it kind of a lot. But the speed Jenner and our battle armor took turns dangerously drawing fire and we got through that one too. After making it through that campaign, had two Night Gyrs, Two Summoners and the Timber Wolf on the front lines- a huge upgrade from the 30 and 50 tonners we started it with.
That was probably our Darkest Night, after we got through that, things felt like they'd be OK. The Medusa still does great as an ATM missile boat, but now it has a Night Gyr friend.
These tools would be more than enough to bring down two 100 tonner Clan monstrosities a few more missions down the road... -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/shanewegner
