Build-a-Lot 4: Power Source
Goals: 6 Triple Energy Saver Apartments, 1 Tennis Court, 1 Public Pool
Mid-level Goal: 6 painted Apartments
Last minute Goal: 6 landscaped Apartments
Start with: $200,000, 6 workers, 3,500 materials, 5 technicians, 1 Hydro Turbine lot, 5 other empty lots
Construct 1 Workshop.
Purchase Lightning Efficiency.
Train 3 workers.
Construct an Apartment. Don’t paint or upgrade it. Sell it as soon as it’s ready.
Buy materials so you have 600.
Construct a Recycling Center.
Buy 5,000 units of materials. From now on buy more materials in lots of 5,000 whenever needed.
Construct an Apartment.
Construct a Hydro Turbine on the Hydro Turbine lot.
Paint the Apartment.
Construct a Tech Center.
Train 6 additional technicians.
Buy the Genius Certificate training at the Tech Center.
Supercharge the Hydro Turbine.
Add 3 Energy Savers to the Apartment. This first Apartment will also be upgraded to 3-Stars. None of the other Apartments need upgrades, just paint, landscaping, and Energy Savers.
Now just keep constructing Apartments, painting them, and adding Energy Savers to them. Start the next Apartment constructing when you have 2 Energy Savers on the previous one. You need a total of 6.
Whenever you need more workers, train another 3 until you have a total of 21.
You can train additional technicians if you need them.
Once you have 4 Apartments built, construct a Garden Center. Now start landscaping all 6 of your Apartments.
Construct the Tennis Court.
Construct the Public Pool.
All of the Build-a-lot games are built on the same premise: to develop a neighborhood with homes, shops, services, etc. while keeping an eye on resources like time, labor, building materials, and money. This makes for an entertaining and occasionally frantic time management game, attempting to meet all the needs of the community within a certain timeframe. Build-a-Lot 4 continues the same idea but adds something new and timely — dealing with the crumbling infrastructure of an aging and near-capacity power grid.
In Build-a-Lot 4, the first and most important thing you need to track is available energy. Before you build a single thing you must assess the available power structure and add to it if necessary. This adds a layer of complication to the basic Build-a-Lot dynamic due to the fact that if you add a house or business without taking into account power needs, the entire neighborhood will black out. And since you cannot collect rent or money from businesses during a blackout, you need to fix the situation, fast!
Modern, so-called "clean" energy facilities are available to build, but watch out, like all complicated technology they can break down, causing wide-spread blackouts.
Retained from the previous game are the weather patterns, which still affect gameplay. Rain slows down outdoor construction, such as building or painting, and if it rains a lot in your community, perhaps a solar power plant is not the way to go.
A new occupation has been added to the workforce: the energy technician. Only technicians can repair power plants, make homes energy efficient, or supercharge a plant. They need their own support structure — a Tech Center — for training.
All in all, Build-a-Lot 4 is a fast-paced, entertaining time management game. Never mind the collapsed real estate market, get out there and build!
