Building a Greenfield Smart Factory powered by Open Source in 2023
Presented at EclipseCon 2023 in Ludwigsburg, Germany by Bharath Sridhar (Deloitte Consulting GmbH) and Joey Bernal (Deloitte Consulting GmbH).
The imperative for sustainable manufacturing has never been greater. By harnessing the power of open-source technologies, we can create smart factories that optimize resource utilization, minimize environmental impact, and embrace circular economy principles. The objective of this talk is to present the concept and practical implementation of building a greenfield smart factory powered by open-source technologies.
Open-source technologies create the much-needed interoperability and the choice of “not inventing the wheel”. We have also combined the process of building a smart factory with the principles of platform engineering and XOps thereby creating a hyper productive ecosystem for developers, thus accelerating the speed of development.
The foundations are built on the pillars of sustainability, scalability, security, event-driven architecture, and a unified namespace. We have also leveraged successful, and community backed frameworks to create a model to commission a factory at scale across discrete and process manufacturing.
Starting with an open data model for unified namespace, creating an enterprise data bus based on MQTT, setting up multiple pipelines for integrated application development and deployment, the talk takes the attendees through an interesting journey into the multiverse. Get a detailed snapshot of how multiple powerful frameworks come together to create a holistic application.
Event Streaming framework – Apache Kafka

And much more…
In summary, attendees can expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of the practical implementation of open-source technologies in building a greenfield smart factory. The presentation will highlight a real-world scenario of building a smart factory, lessons learnt through the journey, including actionable steps leading to a reference model that can be adopted and adapted for specific requirements.
