Butterfly Interview: Daniel Dae Kim, Reina Hardesty and Piper Perabo
Ever since his breakout role in the highly popular TV show Lost, Daniel Dae Kim has been making waves and has returned to the small screen, this time with Prime Video, in the upcoming spy thriller series, Butterfly. The show is based on a graphic novel of the same name by Arash Amel, where Dae Kim jumps into the leading role as a U.S. intelligence operative called David Jung. The series is helmed by director Kitao Sakurai, and joining Dae Kim in the cast are also Reina Hardesty and Piper Perabo. Among the wall-to-wall action that is mandated in an espionage thriller are the themes of family, betrayal, and second chances, making this series gripping not only in terms of its plot, but also its emotions.
David Jung has been living under the radar in South Korea when his past comes to haunt him in the form of his estranged daughter, Rebecca (Hardesty). However, since they have been separated, Rebecca has become a deep-cover elite, sociopathic agent who ruthlessly hunts down her targets, a fate David never wanted for her. The reunion between them is bittersweet, bringing up old scars from the past while they have to tackle new dangers, leading to a whirlwind narrative where we cannot trust what we see, and danger lurks around every corner.
At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Collider's Steve Weintraub sits with Dae Kim, Hardesty, and Perabo to talk about the day's festivities and, of course, Butterfly. The cast talk about their experiences shooting on location in Korea, where Dae Kim also got a special honor, and note the important cultural milestone Butterfly is for them. They also talk about playing new kinds of characters, filming demanding action sequences, and Dae Kim teases future seasons of his other notable project with Netflix, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Finally, Dae Kim also explains how Lost changed Hollywood.
