Black Rabbit Interview: Jude Law and Creators Zach Baylin and Kate Susman Talk Spilers
Editor's Note: The interview below contains spoilers for the entirety of Black Rabbit.
Mere days ago, Netflix dropped its buzzy new star-studded crime thriller, Black Rabbit. The series premiered at TIFF a few weeks back, and after bingeing the gritty, anxiety-inducing series, we were eager to chat with the creative forces behind it. Ahead of the premiere, creators Zach Baylin and Kate Susman, and series star Jude Law, joined us for an in-depth conversation to unpack some of the biggest — and most memorable — moments from the eight-episode series.
Set in modern-day New York City, Black Rabbit perfectly captures the fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled climate of an up-and-coming Manhattan restaurant, run by a washed-up former rock star, Jake Friedken (Law). As if that wasn't already a compelling enough storyline, Black Rabbit's central plot focuses on the return of Jake's older brother, Vince (Jason Bateman), and his grifter ways blow his entire life apart on an epic scale. The series is a true-to-life tale that balances realism with a handful of insane twists and turns.
During our conversation, we discussed how New York becomes a character of its own in Black Rabbit, shaping not just the characters, but also the narrative; how much fun Jude Law had develing into Jake's rock star background; how music became an integral part of the storytelling; and also what was left unsaid about Joe Mancuso's (Troy Kotsur) paternal affection for the Friedken brothers.
