C64 Longplay: The Way (1987, Markt & Technik)
This is a game in which you need to prove your skills. It's about collecting money-bags in a maze. This wouldn't normally be dangerous, but there are monsters and other supernatural creatures which make your live miserable.
Touching one of these creatures, leads you to a second screen, in where you battle the monster to the death of one of you. The opposing enemy and you get a lifebar; if it hits 0, the corresponding fighter loses.
But there are also other irritating things in the maze. You could even step into a "black hole". This means, that you will be teleported to another area in the maze. Furthermore there are walls, which you can only pass if the direction of the arrows are pointing correctly.
As addition to the three-dimensional picture, you also have a small map which shows you your current position and the rest of the environment.
In order to obtain the money-bags, you need to press FIRE while standing directly in front of the money-bag.
The Joystick needs to be plugged into port #2.
Next to the moneybags, you can also find question marks. Again, to obtain it, press FIRE. After obtaining a question mark, you will get a pill. There are different kinds of pills:
Stop-Pill: Monsters won't follow you anymore
Anti-Pill: You can enter the black holes
Hunt-Pill: You are able to hunt monsters and get points from them
Map: You see the whole map of the maze
You activate the Pills by pressing the number which is written beside the Pill at the bottom of the screen.
If you've collected all of the money-bags, a black hole will teleport you into the next level with a harder difficulty. This means more speed and more dangerous battles. As a reward, you will be granted one extra life.
While playing, you're able to switch between 2 different Controls by pressing J:
Control Number 1: You always move in the direction which you press. This means, it doesn't matter in which direction you're currently looking at, you will always move in the direction to where your Joystick shows. (eg. You move east, if pressing right)
Control Number 2: This way of controlling is a bit more complex. Here you always move in the direction, where you're looking at. With the Joystick you always turn 90 degrees right or left, depends on the Joystick movements.
To move that direction, you need to press the Joystick forward. But if you press the Joystick backward, you will turn 180 degrees. This art of controls matches with "maze".
Otherwise following keys are taken:
S Saves the game
L Loads saved file
D Shows directory in the diskette, which is currently in the drive.
RUN/STOP Pauses the game. You can continue the game by pressing any button. This function is very useful when you get interrupted while playing.
Some words about the battles with the monsters:
While fighting you use your normal Joystick. If you want to jump in one direction, you first have to press into the direction, only then press the FIRE button.
But if you want to shoot in a determined direction, you have to first press FIRE and then press the correct direction.
The game generates a Highscore list, which always comes up at the beginning of the game. The Highscore updates automatically while playing if you top one of them and they will get saved again. If you want to start a new Highscore list, just turn off your Floppy before playing.
