Originally released to arcades in 1988 as an upright game cabinet, Cabal used a trackball instead of a joystick to move players about the screen in its early versions. The game cabinets were later fixed with joystick controls.

Players could only move their characters from left to right, and they couldn't move while firing their weapons. The games characters featured a duck and roll ability to dodge incoming enemy fire.

The enemy gauge at the bottom of the screen would indicate how close you were to completing the current stage. Almost all structures can be annihilated in the game, and often stages would start with characters having protective barriers in front of them. Although those barriers could easily be destroyed, even by your own guns.

The track ball version seemed to play the best, as it was the easiest to roll and dodge incoming enemy fire quickly, vs. the joystick versions that felt less responsive in movements.

Their were also various power-ups that could be attained by destroying certain enemies, including buildings. The power-ups would fall directly in front of the player, but they had to be picked up within a matter of seconds, otherwise they would disappear.
