Call Of The Zone - Bandito #382: Saving Stepka Crowbar
From the top of the water tower, at the Village Ruins, I observed a Pseudogiant to the south-east at a designated PDA location. I was supposed to be meet some more Military soldiers there, but instead a Pseudogiant seemed to be camped out there. Most all of the Zone's mutants can usually be killed by a single blast of a gauss gun. The Pseudogiant takes at least three to kill. I shot it twice and it started limping as it was very hurt. One more shot would do it, but I did not.
I was not being cruel by letting it suffer, as I wanted to see something about anomalies and the Pseudogiant. It is one of the few mutants that can walk through a vortex anomaly field and not be affected or thrust up into the air and explode. A Pseudogiant I assumed, was just too large with too much mass to be caught in one. But what about a wounded one, moving slower? That was the point of letting it live, to see at the location it was at, with plenty of anomalies, if even a crippled Pseudogiant can be unaffected.
The other location that caught my eye was the Pump Station directly to the south. There seems to be a lone Bandit there. Being alone, without support and especially poorly armed, I felt like I was looking at a dead man. I decided to go there quickly and assess the situation. I arrived at the Pump Station and confirmed he was alone and only had a pistol. His name was Stepka Crowbar and I started to take him as a Companion, but first I asked him for a job. That was if he gave one, I could then take him with me. I got the job to find him an AK-74, which he really needed and then I hired him. He then wouldn't move. I had no time to waste so I ran back to the Village Ruins, grabbed an AK-74 and returned.
With the job completed and not moving I decided to release him. I watched Stepka Crowbar meander about the Pump Station and then he was about to go east. I hired him again and suddenly he was practically running over me to join me. We made double time back to the Village Ruins and he ran gladly inside the blockhouse to join my other Companions. I now had twenty-five Bandits and the lone Military soldier who had joined us back at the Military Base. I had saved Stepka Crowbar, who probably would not have survived another day in the Marshes armed only with just a pistol.
