Cameron Norrie emulates brilliant Andy Murray record after Paris Masters victory. The 26-year-old followed Tim Henman and Cameron Norrie in achieving the feat.

Cameron Norrie secured his 50th win in 2021 with a win over Reilly Opelka at the Paris Masters. The Brit defeated the big-serving American 6-3, 6-4 to progress to the round of 16 and continue his push for an ATP finals spot.

The victory saw the 26-year-old become just the third British player to reach 50 match wins in a season, following Andy Murray and Tim Henman.

Norrie is vying for one of the final two spots in Turin with Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, European Open champion, Jannik Sinner, Norwegian Casper Ruud and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, who he lost to in Vienna.

He almost certainly has to reach the quarter-finals at this week's Masters 1000 event, where a significant number of points are on offer.

This is the penultimate tournament of the season before the season-ending championships on November 14.

“I managed to put some returns in at the right times and managed to chip on my forehand,” said Norrie following his win.

“But more, I was just happy to get through at the end. It was tricky.”

He added: “Reilly’s a great player and he’s really tough to play against.

“He can play really aggressive at times and he can lock it down and make a lot of balls and then obviously with his serve it’s difficult.

“But I managed to put some returns in at the right times and chip on my forehand side and I was just happy to get through it at the end.”

Speaking on the race to Turin, Norrie, who is aiming to play at the ATP Finals for the first time, said: “I’m watching all the matches and I think everyone else is as well. It’s cool to have something extra to play for.”

The Brit next faces in-form Taylor Fritz in the round of 16, with the American fresh off the back of making the final of St Petersburg last week.

“I’ve played him a lot in my career, I think the most of anyone, so we both know each other’s games very well,” Norrie said of his next opponent.

“He’s extremely confident, had a final last week and has beaten two good opponents this week.

“When he’s confident he’s very, very dangerous so I’m going to have to watch out for him. He too has a good serve so I’m going to have to return well and play the big points very well.”

At the end of this month, Cameron Norrie will be Great Britain's main man at the Davis Cup after Andy Murray was left out.

Team captain Leon Smith has no doubt based his team selection on current form, electing Dan Evans, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski as Norrie’s fellow teammates.

Great Britain are looking to win the Davis Cup for the first time since Murray lead the team to victory in 2015. nonstop news
