As a result of the studies carried out in the Marmara Sea and the Black Sea, scientists in Sinop brought two new species of sea creatures that have not been discovered until now to the world literature.
The discovery was announced by being published in an international scientific journal.
Sinop University Faculty of Arts and Sciences Biology Department Lecturer Assoc. Dr. Güley Kurt Coşkun and her student Dr. Sevgi Kuş and Ege University Faculty of Fisheries Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Melih Ertan Çınar conducted a comprehensive study on the members of the Nephtyidae (Annelida) family, which are distributed in the Black Sea and Marmara coasts of our country.
Two of the 6 polyketide types identified as a result of the study were named and described for the first time for the scientific world.
One of the species was named Nephtys sinopensis, referring to its type locality, the city of "Sinop", and the other was named inermonephtys turcica, referring to Turkey.
Stating that the study was carried out with the samples collected within the scope of the thesis study of the doctoral student Sevgi Kuş, Assoc. Dr. Güley Kurt Coşkun said, “Our study was about the taxonomy of polychaete species. We have defined 2 new species to the scientific world. We identified one of them as nephtys sinopensis and the other as inermonephtys turcica.”
SAMPLES FROM 300 STATIONS ARE EXAMINED
Stating that they have done extensive work, Dr. Sevgi Kuş, on the other hand, said, “This is a small part of my doctoral thesis. My thesis is a comprehensive study that includes 300 stations from all shores of the Black Sea, Marmara, Aegean and Levant Seas.
Pointing out that a small part of the study includes only the Marmara and the Black Sea, Kuş said, "These materials were obtained from the TÜBİTAK 1001 study in Marmara, TÜBİTAK studies in other seas, and the majority of the materials taken within the scope of the 'Integrated Pollution Monitoring in the Seas' projects of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. "We did a study that included a small part of the Marmara and Black Sea regions," he said.
ANNOUNCED THE NAME OF SINOP AND TURK
Stating that the discoveries made contribute to Turkey's biodiversity, Dr. Kuş said, “As the type locality of Nephtys sinopensis is the Black Sea, it takes its name from Sinop. The other inermonephtys turcica is a species with distribution in Marmara, Aegean Sea and Levant Sea. His name is also Turkish," he said. nonstop news
