Described as ‘hi-bit’ on its Steam store page, Owlboy is a 2D platform adventure game on steam with the Owlboy look and Owlboy gameplay inspired by Nintendo games of old, such as Super Mario Bros 3. The game follows our very own Owlboy, Otus, who is beautifully designed character through which the Owlboy steam gameplay takes place. Revolving around his struggles into owl-hood (not to mention the appearance of sky pirates) Owlboy and it’s gameplay takes place in a beautifully realised 2D world full of intriguing environments to explore, and a whole host of interesting characters.
One notable point about Owlboy is it’s long development time, Owlboy began development in 2007 and finally saw it’s release on steam on 1st November. Wikipedia has this to say concerning the Owlboy release:
“Beginning development in 2007, the game spent the better part of a decade in development. The team worried about the expectation of fans and thus started over several times. Andersen also had to deal with suffering from depression, which he had since childhood. Owlboy will be released primarily for Microsoft Windows based personal computers, but D-Pad is also considering a release for home consoles. The game was shown off at PAX 2013. At PAX 2016, it was announced that the game would be released on November 1, 2016.”
Since it’s release however, Owlboy and the Owlboy steam gameplay has been hailed with widespread critical acclaim, even sitting on Metacritic with a score of 90/100. With Chloi Rad from IGN stating that Owlboy “shines thanks to surprisingly varied, Metroidvania-style gameplay and a charming cast of unlikely heroes”.
