1According to Schreier, the game will be a sequel to Modern Warfare 2, although it seems unlikely that it will be called Modern Warfare 3. It will reportedly feature new multiplayer maps and a single-player campaign that follows the story of last year's game. Infinity Ward Studios is overseeing the project and Treyarch is providing build support.
The release began as an expansion for Modern Warfare 2, and some Activision executives feared that fatigue from annual Call of Duty releases was partly to blame for Vanguard's disappointing critical and commercial performance in 2021, the report continued. However, after the success of Modern Warfare 2, the company decided to turn the Sledgehammer-developed version into a whole new installment.
