Carlos Zárate vs. Alfonso Zamora: The 'Battle of the Z' that paralyzed Mexico in 1977 #boxing
The fight we're going to remember took place on April 23, 1977, at the Inglewood Forum in Los Angeles, California. The fight didn't have a title at stake, only the honor of the gladiators who were ready to give it their all at 118 pounds. The Tepito native showed up to the fight with 45 fights under his belt, all won. Meanwhile, in the other corner, a young man with only 29 fights under his belt, all won. With 30 seconds left in the third round, Carlos knocked down Alfonso with a right hook that landed directly on his chin. Trembling, Zamora got to his feet to finish the round and rest in his corner. The terror in the ring had just begun for "El Dado," as the fourth round would be his last. Alfonso would go to the canvas twice more in the fourth round, leading Zamora's father to throw in the towel. Shortly after the fight ended, Alfonso's father jumped into the ring enraged to confront Hernández, claiming he had placed an irritant in Zárate's gloves. Police had to intervene and separate the two men who were grappling. Zamora acknowledged at the end of the fight that he didn't remember much after the third round.
