I go through the game using save states in this video to point out some strategies, explain some quirks of the AI, and warn you about a few really nasty checkpoints. This was recorded on an original console using an Everdrive N8. None of this stuff is useful for speedrunning, but if you want to beat the game without continuing, without dying, whatever, you'll find a lot of this stuff useful for controlling this game's randomness (it's less random than you think!) and optimizing for safety.

I think this is the perfect game to learn (be that for 1CCs, deathless runs, or just beating the game before your patience runs out) if you're thinking about getting good at action sidescrollers. It's not the easiest game in the world, but if you can learn to deal with its awkward jump, random enemy AI and subweapon drops, and occasional rough spots for recovering from deaths, I think you'll be well equipped to handle other games in this vein (Ninja Gaiden, the other Castlevania games, The Legendary Axe, even run-and-gun games like Mega Man and Contra).
