Stage 9 is one of the hardest in the whole game.
The first room (9-01) has a series of demons dropping hunchbacks. Just take it slow and pick off the hunchbacks as soon as they land.
You also have a vertical corridor in 9-02; just wait for the best opportunity to hit the Dragon Pillars, and watch for the gargoyles that also fly around.
In 9-03, you want to grab the holy water on the right side of the screen (about a third to halfway up), and then kill as many enemies with it as you can to upgrade it to double shot. Just make sure to avoid taking any other subweapon too.
The last room 9-04 is the cruellest of the bunch. You have water currents, fishmen, and worst of all, the birds. They swoop down and it's usually really hard to hit them (unless you have something like a battle axe that can shoot upward) as they often hover just above you. Even skipping by the room with Grant can be troublesome as you still get 2 birds chasing you.
There's also no healing in between the room with the birds, the bridge with the medusas and the boss (the doppelgänger). Again, I used the triple holy water, though I have gotten the doppelgänger stuck on the ledge above used the battle axe in earlier runs of the game.
