I am sad to report that Castlevania: Lament of Innocence is... one of my least favorite Castlevania games to date. I had given up on the game early back in the day when the game was first released, and replaying it on stream reminded me why I had done so.

First, the levels, or dungeons, are overly long. They're not that interesting to look at, either. They all start feeling pretty same-y quite fast. The music doesn't stand out, either, except for a couple of tunes. What's worse, though, is the relic system. I went through the entire game with just the basic one the game gives you at the beginning, because they're almost all tied to enemy drops! And since the drop rates in this game are extremely low... I never got another one! What kind of mechanism is that?? Can you imagine playing Circle of the Moon and never getting a single card drop? Or Aria of Sorrow and never getting a single soul drop? Wow. The game is quite challenging, too. Some of the character designs are cool, though.

I really like Castlevania 64 and its pseudo-upgrade, Legacy of Darkness. Lament of Innocence being the first 3D game since those games, I had high hopes for it. Unfortunately, it just falls short in almost every way. Did I mention secret items tied to hidden spots in fixed camera angles? What about replaying levels once you get colored keys that open doors you couldn't open the first time? Don't get me wrong, I did not despise the game or anything, I just thought it was one of the weakest entries in the franchise so far. You can replay the game with a secret character after you clear the game once to get different final bosses and a different ending, but I couldn't bring myself to replay the game after beating it once. I almost beat the secret boss on my first try, but, alas, failed at the end and did not bother trying again.

The Japanese title, "Castlevania", translates to... uh, Castlevania. That's it. No subtitle. Nothing. Just Castlevania in English. Same for the European version, actually. The North American version added the subtitle, thank goodness. Remember how so many games were just called "Akumajou Dracula" in Japanese? Well, here comes "Castlevania". At least the previous two Japanese games which used "Castlevania" in English had a subtitle to them. Weird!
