New Octo, new travelers. Thief Throné, Scholar Osvald, Cleric Temenos, Warrior Hikari, Apothecary Castti, Merchant Partitio, Dancer Agnea & Hunter Ochette -- those are the eight new characters that we're going to be traveling with for ~100 hours.

Essentially, the game follows the exact formula the first game did. Pick a character, play their first chapter, encounter somebody else, play their chapter, and so on and so on. You can pretty much play them in any order you want. The first character you choose cannot be removed from your party until you clear their last chapter. The battle system is also pretty much the same. Find the enemy's weak points to have them revealed to you forever. Boost to strengthen your attacks or to attack more than once per turn. Change your job class at will. This time, however, characters also have unique latent powers they can use in battle, for a little extra personality.

If you felt like the stories were disjointed in the first game, this game won't change your mind on the matter. You're also bound to find some stories more interesting than others. Some of my favorites were Throné's, Osvald's and Hikari's, while some of the weaker ones for me were Agnea's, Partitio's and Ochette's. That being said, I think all characters were fun and mostly well written. The HD-2D style is just as pleasant as ever, the Japanese voice acting was on point, and the music was just as banging as ever. Truly, a brilliant soundtrack.

Difficulty-wise, Octopath Traveler II lives up to its name. It's not an easy game. You can't just brute force your way through battles. Careful thinking and exploiting the enemies' weaknesses is key to winning. I died quite a few times to various bosses or side quest bosses. That being said, it's not overly difficult, either. Only the superboss after the endgame requires extra grinding, which I couldn't be bothered to do. I still show what he looks like in part 24, though. At least, as opposed to the first game, OT2 features a proper final boss that's pretty awesome. I was also pretty amazed at how many times they turned the battle system on its head, actually. So many battles in this game throw a curveball at you, forcing you to rethink your strategies and thus keeping the battle system fresh and fun.

There are a TON of side quests in the game -- and I cleared all of them. Whether that's worth it or not will be up to you, but most of the ones I showcase in the final part of the playthrough are actually interesting post-game stories about side characters we had encountered throughout the game. What I didn't do, however, is completing all requirements to get three available slots for each job, because some of them just force you to grind for items and that's one of the most boring requirements in JRPGs.

OT2 is a very long game. So it may not be for everyone. But I truly loved it, just as I had loved the first one. It doesn't really do anything new, that's true, but why fix what wasn't broken in the first place? Highly recommended if you're a fan of JRPGs!
