Finishing Castlevania month with a game I've never played before, Castlevania the Adventure Rebirth! The only way to get this game is via emulation or softmodding your Wii to play WAD files. Nintendo's digital store for the Wii was closed back in 2018, which was the only place to buy this game.

A shame I didn't play this one sooner, as it's an awesome game! It hits all the beats of a great Castlevania. The gameplay, sound, graphics, bosses, it's all well done! After a long era of exploration heavy Castlevanias, leveling up your character, constantly finding new equipment and weapons and mechanics, it was nice to get back to the roots of the series!

The resurrection of Dracula is at hand once more! The latest descendant of the Belmont clan, Christopher, is called to the gates of Castlevania to fulfill the destiny of his cursed lineage! Armed with the legendary vampire killer whip, and a lineup of powerful subweapons, we begin our journey through the castle of Count Dracula!

I really appreciate Konami's choice to use their old sound font from the arcade in this game's music. By the time the Wii was out, sound limitations were looong gone, but I think it gives the soundtrack a lot more character. And my god this game can bust out some rockin tunes, every track is really good, but I think I'd choose "Something Loopy" from Stage 4 as my favorite. It feels very different from the usual Castlevania music, but still fits very well, it especially brings out the "over halfway there", kind of atmosphere.

The bosses are the highlight in this game for me, they are some of the best bosses in the series. There's really only a couple of them that missed the mark. Death himself of course makes an appearance, and he doesn't dissapoint. It takes some serious dodging skills to defeat this guy. 2:27:54 Timestamp

The best boss battle has gotta be the man himself, Dracula. It starts out pretty standard, as the Count teleports around the room hurling fireballs at you. After destroying his first form, he then mutates into a giant humanoid bat creature, jumping around breathing fire. The real fight kicks in at phase 3 though, as the room crumbles around you, revealing a massive demonic face.

This form is just insane, the screen starts exploding with projectiles, raining fire, rolling eyeballs flood the floor, and balls of electricity seek out and home in on Christopher. It takes some serious skill to defeat Dracula, but with about 45 minutes of attempting it, we defeat the lord of darkness once more. The castle crumbles as the sun rises over Transylvania. But the journey of Christopher isn't over yet, as we join him again in Belmont's Revenge for the Gameboy.

Happy Halloween!
