Donkey Kong: Original Edition is a revised version of the NES classic, featuring the reintroduction of the cement factory stage and additional animations that were missing in the original. Initially, it was exclusively available on the Virtual Console. In Europe, it was preloaded on the red Wii consoles celebrating the PAL region's 25th Anniversary, released on October 29, 2010. Japanese players received download codes for the 3DS Virtual Console after purchasing New Super Mario Bros. 2 or Brain Age: Concentration Training from the Nintendo eShop between July 28 and September 2, 2012. Meanwhile, in North America, codes were distributed to users who purchased one of five selected 3DS games on the Nintendo eShop and registered them on Club Nintendo from October 1, 2012, to January 6, 2013. In Europe and Australia, the game became available for direct purchase on the Nintendo 3DS eShop in September 2014. Later, the original arcade version was included in the Arcade Archives series for the Nintendo Switch on June 14, 2018, and the NES version debuted as part of the Nintendo Classics service on September 19.
