In 1991, id software created one of the most unsung but important games ever in Catacomb 3-D, a fantasy first-person corridor shooter that required defeating monsters with your magic attacks and finding keys and breakable walls to progress. Catacomb 3-D did most of what Wolfenstein 3-D and DOOM are known for first, from its technological advancements that made the action smooth and fast to its focus on acknowledging the player avatar on screen and in the HUD. In order to understand how significant Catacomb 3D’s milestones are, we must revisit the most important first-person games like in Maze and Spasim in the 1970s all the way up to Catacomb 3-D itself.
