Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Captain Chang Plays... 688 (I) Hunter/Killer
In the previous episode, we sank a ship used by hostiles to mine the Adriatic Sea, and the submarine escorting it.
Campaign Mission 7: Across the Line of Death
Our next order takes us to the waters north of the Gulf of Sidra, where Khadaffi is still yelling something about the "Line of Death" and daring others to cross it despite it being international waters. We are to clear the way for CVBG composed of USS Nimitz and 2 x Arleigh Burke-class Destroyers. Expect Libyans to make trouble.
As we start, we poked up the antenna to get an update. Seems there's an Osa boat to our southeast and a Kilo sub to our northeast. And soon we got a contact on the Osa, but he's pretty darn far away. I tried shooting an ADCAP, but it eventually ran out of juice. Should have loaded 2 x Harpoons.
To the northeast, we eventually detected the Kilo, and it was trying to get to the Nimitz. As it's my job to keep the CVBG alive, I really should not have tried for one-shot one kill, as I only fired one ADCAP at a time, and both times the Kilo managed to dodge it. We fired a third torpedo...
We fired the two loaded Harpoons toward the southeast against the Osa, and while it did have SAM, it was also defending against Harpoons from the Arleigh Burke, so he wasn't quite expecting our Harpoons, and one got through to kill it.
I went to the objectives to check the score, and found that the Kilo was already dead... then something else blew up. Looks like a civilian ship died. I shut down my third torpedo, as both targets are dead now.
I decided to get back to periscope depth and end the mission before someone else died.
Boss Newton was happy, something about I've broken the office pool record for successes or something like that. We got a full 1000 pts rating as our primary targets stayed alive, the Kilo died, and the Osa also died.
Checking the logs shows that Arleigh Burke fired a volley of small torpedoes and sunk the Kilo after my 2nd ADCAP damaged it. But that volley of torpedos also caught a civilian merchantman and sank it. Well, not my problem.
Next mission... We are probably going to retaliate against Libya...
