Before Donkey Kong Country and GoldenEye 007, there was Snake Rattle 'n Roll. Developed by Rare and released in 1990, Snake Rattle 'n Roll was an isometric platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System, similar to Marble Madness. Players help a bodyless snake grow a body by eating tiny walking spheres called Nibbley Pibbleys. Once the snake is heavy enough, it can tip the end-of-level scale and open the exit. The game features 11 levels of incredibly difficult platforming, forcing players to navigate ruthless level design. Jumping onto a single tile by changing direction in midair—and doing so with notoriously flawed controls—is a common request of Snake Rattle 'n Roll. The game's design is unforgiving. It features hidden warps, fortunately, as well as a list of enemies as bizarre as the concept itself. Snake Rattle 'n Roll is a single and multiplayer NES game.
