On July 27, 1982, Howard Scott Warshaw was commissioned by Atari to develop a video game adaptation of the celebrated Spielberg film E.T., in a ridiculously short time frame of 6 weeks. The result was an unmitigated disaster. Despite being critically condemned as one of the worst video games ever made with its monotonous and boring gameplay, it would go on to become one of the top selling titles for the 2600, proving that licenses sell themselves. E.T. stands today as the symbol of the Crash of 1983, one of the games that lost consumer confidence in gaming, though Warshaw has been generally pardoned for his product due to the impossibly tight task he was burdened with.
