One of my favorite pastimes in between community races is to play the endless mode. Speedrunning it definitely tests your ability to make chains quickly. Max score is 99,999. Any% score for full credits is 30,000. Speeding up getting to those scores requires taking advantage of the fact that any match made while a chain is going on scores according to the current chain link--the match does not have to be part of the chain. The strategy is to go up to x13 for the maximum score multiplier (beyond that is x? which scores... zero) and then match as much as you can before the chain finishes. Combos do not score near as well.

This video has a max score run done in a race and a 30k run done in between races.

Recorded April 1 and May 6, 2022. Played on original Super Nintendo console.
