This is a part 1 of a playthru of Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin on Level 1 Hard Mode using a clean save file.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is one of my favorite games of all time, with interesting weapons and items, a fun progression involving two characters you can switch between, and surprisingly-difficult bosses to fight. One of the coolest things it has however is once you beat the game, you unlock various different modes and difficulty options. One of these is to play the game again on hard mode, limiting you to level 1. This makes the game considerably more difficult, so the idea is that you are supposed to use your previous cleared file to bring over all of you equipment, skills, HP and MP ups to help even the odds.

We didn't do any of that. This is a run involving a clean save file. This means none of that, and we have to rely on starting equipment, minimal HP and MP, and no money to buy our way to success. We do minimal damage and die in 1-2 hits, and it's usually 1 hit. What follows is a run that, at least for the first half of the game, turns an action game into a puzzle game as each room needs to be handled in a certain way, and each boss becomes a strict routine until we can get the items necessary to make our lives much easier.
