If you're new to Project Zomboid you should change the Aim Outline setting to "Any Weapon". That will make it so that zombies get highlighted green whenever they get in range of your melee weapon. Also change the cursor visibility to 75%, which is the max value, and that should make combat much more reliable. If you're having performance issues you should try lowering the blood decals to "None". Blood decals can tank performance even on some high end hardware if you kill too many zombies in an area.
