It’s time to officially add Gambit to the roster of X-Men characters as a standalone movie starring Channing Tatum is on the way! Channing has long been discussing his wish to take over the role of mutant Remy LeBeau and according to Deadline he is now officially signed on and a spinoff film is currently in development. Josh Zetumer, who most recently penned the RoboCop remake, will write the script based off a treatment from original Gambit co-creator Chris Claremont. For those of you unfamiliar with the character, Gambit is a member of the X-Men with the ability to control kinetic energy. His ability most typically manifests by converting the potential energy of objects into kinetic energy and using those items as explosives – with playing cards being his typical weapon of choice. He was first introduced on screen in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch. That film has pretty much been disregarded when it comes to the new X-Men timeline thanks to Days of Future Past, so expect Channing to bring a much different vibe to the Ragin Cajun. In fact, he’s stated in previous interviews that he plans on playing up Gambit’s Cajun background, something Kitsch’s version abandoned completely. No word just yet when we can expect to see Gambit on the big screen, but Fox has already set July 13th, 2018 for an untitled Marvel film, so that could be a likely candidate. Depending on what time period the film takes place, we could also potentially see Gambit introduced in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which will be set in the early 80’s. To find out which characters could potentially become Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen in that film, go ahead and click here. But first, who’s excited to see Channing Tatum in a Gambit solo film and which time period do you think it should take place – the 80’s or present day?
