I have never actually tried to learn much about Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) in the time that I have played it so far. I have just passed about 650 hours logged in-game on Steam. The only thing I've ever used this game for is to warm up for playing other games, or to just run around and shoot at things for fun to decompress after a long day of streaming a game like 'Escape From Tarkov'.

I've never played CS:GO competitively, or attempted to. When I was a kid I used to wait to get home from school to play Counter-Strike 1.5 and 1.6 with my friends from school. I never attempted to take it seriously or compete at a high level, but I did "try" to win of course in the matches that I played with my friends.

The last time I have ever even been in a 'Surf' server was either on 1.6 or possibly on CS 'Source'. I never gave much effort into getting good at surfing or attempting some like KZ servers, but I had at least been exposed to them before two decades ago. I have never lost interest for watching pros compete in CS at the highest level, I find it very entertaining.

Through watching lots of tournaments and events that pros play in I've observed a lot of their styles and tendencies. I started to pay attention to certain jumps that most 'pros' execute flawlessly almost every time. Every so often someone will miss one of these jumps and everyone "laughs", but I started to wonder. Just how difficult are these jumps to execute really?

Way more difficult than you think if you've never tried it, that's for sure. Jumps that look like they should be extremely easy to execute on the 1st try took me multiple tries and elongated periods of time getting the method down just right. Once I started to attempt some of the 'KZ' and 'Surf' maps I quickly realized just how inadequate my movement knowledge and abilities truly were.

Everything that is in this video was recorded the same day on the 1st day that I tried joining these servers to learn, and try and improve. Only after a few hours of KZ and Surf practice, returning to Arms Race (what I was already used to, and comfortable with) felt like 2nd nature. I started to realize that the movement has been the most important part all along.

Instead of 'rushing' to get the crosshair in the correct position, it's much more efficient and beneficial to just use your movement to get the crosshair as close to on target as possible before making any "aiming" adjustments. This all sounds very obvious and literal to say of course. From my point of view, it takes actually attempting KZ and Surf server maps that are above your current skill level to actually evaluate and analyze what needs improvements and in what manner as well.

The experience of actually translating these techniques into the other modes and practices has a monumental impact on your own progress. and feel for the game itself. Being able to more freely and efficiently move throughout the physical space has such massive influence on everything else that you do as the rest of the 'gameplay' is unfolding. I feel exponentially more comfortable in general playing the game, I can also see so exponential room for potential growth if I stick to practicing.

Once I feel comfortable enough to execute some of the KZ and Surf maps without having to constantly reset to checkpoints over and over, I will definitely want to make some videos going through these types of maps. At the very least this type of 'footage' could be used as "b-roll" for narrating over the top of on some other type of video.

I've got a long way to go for sure. The fact that I feel I have already felt improvements from just my 1st day of practicing these servers is nice though. If it didn't feel any different at all, I would have no idea or concept of how long I would have to actually practice on these types of servers before seeing any actual improvements that could translate to other game modes and servers alike.

The fact that I felt this much more comfortable and saw this much improvement in less than one day is extremely motivating to me. I can't wait to get back on there and hate myself on the KZ server for hours.. Then, when you go back to another game mode, sheesh.
