Cheaper, Better, Faster.. Stronger? Is Oculus Quest 2 the BEST VR option in 2020? Product Overview
The Oculus Quest 2 is here. Could this be the best standalone AND PC VR headset for 2020?!
Our very own Nikki Dean takes a look at the features and what this new headset has to offer.
If you’re looking to buy a standalone VR headset that you don't have to connect to a PC then you should definitely take a look at the new Oculus Quest 2.
The original Quest was a hit due to it's relatively low price and the fact that it's a battery powered VR headset you can pretty much use out of the box with no wires and easy set up
but it also gave you the option of connecting to a PC via a link cable if you wanted to take your VR experience even further
Well, the Quest 2 is even better - it's cheaper for starters despite being more powerful than before with an improved Processor, the Snapdragon XR2.
It comes with 6GB of Ram, an extra 2 on it's predecessor, plus a higher resolution display that’s 50% sharper at
1832 x 1920 pixels per eye
The Quest 2 also features a 90Hz* refresh rate, allowing smoother motion than the original Quest's 72Hz panel.
The headset itself is slightly smaller and so lighter than before too
at 503g v 571g. Hand tracking which came to the original Quest via a firmware update, is baked in to the Quest 2 so you can blast, slash and groove your way through your favourite games such as Beat Sabre and Jurassic World Aftermath, which you buy through the Occulus store, without the need for extra base stations.
And as its battery-powered it allows you to freely roam around your physical and digital play spaces without fear of tripping up on a wire, as mentioned though you still have the option to connect your Quest 2 to a gaming PC with an Oculus Link cable which you buy separately
giving you access to hundreds of PC VR games and experiences including meeting up with friends and live casting so you can share your VR experience with people around you, making it pretty sociable.
It has built in speakers too, giving you 3D positional audio for added realism and is available in either 64 or 256 GB
In the box you get the Quest 2 Headset itself,
2 touch controllers
2 AA batteries
Power adaptor
Glasses Spacer and a charging cable
The controllers have 2 buttons inside, A and B, a little joystick and a home button plus the safety strap and the inbuilt hand tracking means once the headset is on you're ready to start playing
