Apparently there's a drop dash if you press and hold up + jump during a jump, but it's a bit janky.
Also there's different art, different level layouts and music. I especially like the hanging animation and how Knuckles looks like in the intro, oh and the Carnival Night music (which was later used in the Sonic & Knuckles Collection) is probably the best thing to come out of this.
