I actually didn't even need to take his queen at the end. I had forced mate with 1. Qg3+ Kf1 2. Qf2# or 1. Qg3+ Kh1 2. Nf2#
I still had forced mate after I took his queen, but it was a waste of a move. And he resigned before I could deliver the goods.
As for why I was losing in the first place (to which he didn't take advantage of), I played f6 (should have played h6 instead?), which exposed my king and allowed his bishop to get a nice pin on my pawn. He definitely should have traded and at some point in the middle game and gotten a pawn and attack out of it. He was too slow with his attack, which let me castle and get counterplay. He didn't take advantage of my c-pawn being pinned to my king.
