Chia Coin Farming GREATLY REDUCES SSD's Lifespans, leading to e-Waste
As the hyped Chia Coin reaches above $600 in value after being listed on multiple crypto exchanges, one aspect of Chia farming (this crypto's specific term of "mining") has been overlooked by way too many people: SSD longevity.
SSDs have a finite amount of write cycles due to the nature of how SSDs operate. However, Hardware Times has noted that Chia recklessly abuses write cycles, and as such, SSDs lifespans have been greatly reduced. When used with the Chia Blockchain, 512 GB SSDs can stop working in less than two months, and 1 TB SSDs can stop working in less than three months. Imagine what they could have stored with those SSDs instead of farming Chia to make those SSDs disposable.
I will also explain the truth about the unprecedented scalping situation we are facing today, as well as discuss how cryptocurrencies create harmful eWaste.
NOTE: One thing I forgot to mention is that nVMe drives create A LOT of heat. If not cooled properly, this can lead to early failure of an SSD.
