Things Just Got EVEN WORSE For Gamers and End Users
Tomorrow, a event that will be the catalyst for yet another shortage of computer parts will happen: the launch of the new cryptocurrency known as Chia.
Unlike conventional cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and altcoins, which use power-hungry GPUs and ASICs, Chia relies on free hard disk/SSD space. In theory, this should be more environmentally conscious. In practice, though, large-capacity hard drives and fast SSDs have already been selling out worldwide. It will only be a matter of time until all hard drives and SSDs are in the hands of scalpers, just like what we're seeing with GPUs.
In the People's Republic of China, where almost all high-volume mining takes place (and I mean warehouses!), the price of hard disks have increased at least twofold according to reports by Alibaba (who runs Taobao and AliExpress) and JD. A SSD manufacturer said that warranties will be voided if SSDs are used for Chia farming (equivalent of mining), but warranties are pretty much useless in mainland China.
I will also explain why crypto mining might be used to fund Uighur Genocide. We can't let Beijing 2022 be Berlin 1936.
