Choreograph REALISTIC Fights, Not REAL Fights! - Fight Choreography Tutorial Part 2
Last week we touched on Fake, Dramatic, and Realistic fights for fight choreographies in movies and animations. If you missed that video, check it out here: https://youtu.be/2ho-3JXiRTo
This week, we cover "Really realistic" and "Real" fights, as well as talk about what category my fight scene "Optimistic Self Defense" falls into. You can watch Optimistic Self Defense here: https://youtu.be/htMCMqa93qM
Really Realistic fight scenes are usually used when the movie is based around a combat sport seen today such as MMA or Boxing. The examples I use in this video are "Creed" and "Unbeatable".
Really Realistic fighting strays away from using super fancy moves and stick to what functionally works, that doesn't mean there aren't any fancy moves at all- they're just much rarer. All moves used by the actors should be commonly seen in a fight and have a high percentage of working, this is because the target audience of movies/animations with the "Really Realistic" style should be aimed towards people who already have an understanding of the martial arts.
"Unbeatable" has a great way of showing how something that is not commonly understood by regular people such as Chokes and Joint Locks can be shown in a movie and still be understood. If you're making a Really Realistic fight, don't stray away from having complex maneuvers and chokes as long as laymen are able to understand it as well. There's no point showing a really complex grappling move like a Twister when even practitioners of the arts might not have seen a Twister.
The difference between really realistic fights and real fights are that real fights are unchoreographed. (Of course, in a movie, the guys aren't actually trying to rip each other's heads off either).
For the most realistic high level fights possible, one should study the UFC as they house the most high level fighters in the entire world. This is a much better reference than "Street Fighters" as they usually have zero to no experience at all.
Not only should you look into a UFC fighter's fighting style, but also their mindset, attitude, choice of words, and behavior- as these all reflect in the fights later on.
