The key to understanding what makes a fight scene believable is understanding where your story lies on the scale of "Fake - Realistic - Real".

A fight scene is not an easy thing to do- whether you're doing it in animation or in real life- a lot of what I'm going to say still applies.

This is the fight scene that I released last week:
https://youtu.be/htMCMqa93qM

In this video, I breakdown what makes up each part of "Fake", "Dramatic", and "Realistic" fighting. Although the word "Fake" carries negative connotations, it's important to know that a "Fake" fight can be utilized just as effectively as a realistic fight when done correctly.

Fake fights require the least amount of skill and choreography- it requires the actor to do things that would never work in real life but look like their in a struggle. When done correctly, it works as comedic relief and is good for comedy movies.

"Dramatic" fights are Jackie Chan styled action. This arguably requires the most skill as the actors must know what they're doing and know how to take it several levels higher- to the point where what they're doing is borderline ridiculous.

Finally, "Realistic" fights are the main focus of this video. Realistic fights require a good knowledge of both Choreography and real fighting in general. The actor must know a variety of different martial arts moves and perform them regardless of how effective/likely it would be to work in real life. The key points to making a realistic fight work is understanding what COULD work in a fight in a very hypothetical 1 out of billion situation, and then manipulate the choreography so that this 1% move works 100% of the time.

The next video will cover "Really Realistic" fighting as well as "Real" fighting.
