ahh sunsoft, these guys make some godly chiptune that's practically in par with Konami's VRC6. Butter smooth animation and superb graphics, that's what made sunsoft stood out.

Anyways today we have their most well known title, Chou-Wakuesei Senki - Metafight or Blaster Master for the states.

Plot for the japanese version is a mysterious invader named Goez attacks the planet Sophia the 3rd (dunno what happened to the previous planets). The NORA science academy creates the Metal Attacker (the tank), an all terrain battle tank created by Dr. Jennifer Cornet and piloted by genius boy pilot Kane Gardner. The US makes no mention of Jennifer or Kane, you just have Fred saving his frog who happened to touch a radioactive box outside his house. The japanese plot makes more sense opposed to rescuing your frog and finding a tank that the main character somehow knows to use.

On to the gameplay, it's an action platformer that's also a top down shooter. What you see is what you get really. Your main goal in each area is to enter a dungeon, defeat a boss, and get an upgrade for your tank to use. The tank at the start starts off weak until you get more upgrades for it till it becomes all terrain. It also shoots missiles and lighting from the bottom. The lighting power-up has a horrible hitbox so I much recommend just sticking with your missiles.

In the dungeon segments our main character can also collect upgrades for his gun. The gun on it's default power level has short range, once you power it up some more it'll have more range and finally can faze through walls making your gun OP.

Difficulty wise, it's very fair. The only complaints I have are the frog boss can only take damage when it's mouth is open. Second complaint is only seen in the japanese version of blaster master. In area 4 with the tall ladder, you have to make a leap of faith and time the jump button so you can grab on to the ladder or else you die of fall damage. That's another complain I have, Jason (our main characters name in the US) is very weak when he exits the tank, he takes double the damage from enemies and suffers fall damage but hey, that's what the tank is for.

Graphics are nice and huge and the music is top notch albeit being an early title. It's a must play for the NES. Just be warned that it's a long game and it doesn't have a save system.
