A playthrough of Takara's 1991 action-platformer for the Nintendo Famicom, Choujinrou Senki Warwolf (超人狼戦記 WARWOLF).

In this video I'm using a translation patch created by Stardust Crusaders. If you'd like to check out for yourself, you can find more information at https://www.romhacking.net/translations/1656/

Choujinrou Senki Warwolf (lit. "Super Werewolf War Chronicles: Warwolf") is the Japanese version of Data East's 1990 NES game Werewolf: The Last Warrior (https://youtu.be/kojEbuXizZU). Werewolf started out as a US-exclusive, but seven months after its initial release, Takara published a fully localized Japanese version of the game for the Famicom.

What makes the Japanese version so interesting is that it wasn't a mere translation job. Several noteworthy tweaks were made to game:

-The story has been changed. In this version, a scientist/adventurer goes missing while exploring a cave on Red Earth, a planet that has been colonized by humans. In that cave, he stumbles upon and unleashes an ancient evil power, and four years later, he emerges as the leader of NEO, an army of biomonsters intent on conquering Red Earth. You play as Ken, the last surviving werewolf and Red Earth's only hope.

-In the Japanese version, the controls have been reversed. The A button jumps and the B button attacks.

-The charge time for special moves has been decreased.

-The overhead grab is much easier to trigger.

-High jumps no longer have to be done from a standstill.

-Most of the first stage's layout has been changed.

-Enemies respawn more often, especially when scrolling the screen backwards.

-The drum samples are of higher quality and sound less distorted.

-The werewolf fight before the final boss has different music.

-The ending screen is totally different.

Warwolf isn't dramatically different from Werewolf, but there are enough changes to make it worth checking out if you're a fan of the original.
