Melphyx (aka Retinite in the SNES version) is the optional boss that must be dealt with for Fiona's reforestation and Lucca's Green Dream side quest. The earliest you can meet this guy is by telling the woman in Zeal to protect the plant, but something that might tip you off you shouldn't be here yet will be the regular enemies that can prove to be a bit too much for you.
This guy is one tricky beast to deal with, unless you absolutely know what you're doing he's nigh impossible to beat before you reach Level 40+.
I brought a team hand-picked for this fight as they have everything essential to win: Water attacks to decrease its defense, Lightning to keep the core alive (I'll go on detail about it soon enough) and physical attacks to destroy Melphyx.
The core strategy (pun intended) for this fight is to NEVER let Melphyx's core to die (it has 900~1000 HP?), even if it heals it up a bit it's not nearly enough to keep up with some of your strongest skills, keep the core alive at all costs with Lightning attacks until you're almost done with the boss entirely. If the core goes down Melphyx will go *fucking ballistic* on you using attacks that are so powerful which makes this fight impossible to win at my current level.
The second most important thing is that you MUST use Water damage to make him vulnerable, if you forgot to bring either Marle or Frog, just reset and put either in your party. Bring some heavy physical hitter like Robo or Ayla as well since you'll need them to thrash Melphyx after you lower his defense.
One last note is that I destroyed the lower part first since if left last it'll regularly use an attack that leeches over 300 HP from one character which can force you to keep healing a lot.
