You can lose this fight and still progress the game, but you lose out on some EXP and TP. Golem counters your attacks with an attack of the same type. However, the counter is not immediate. The counter takes some time to charge. So, the trick is to attack Golem with different attack types to cancel the current counter's charge with another counter's charge. Doing this correctly means Golem should never attack you. Except Golem does a finishing attack when he dies, so keep your health up for that.
