Recap: After clearing out a monster nest in the desert in the middle ages, Robo volunteers to stay behind to help fulfull Fiona's wish to turn it into a lush forest. In the present, a shrine has been erected to honor Fiona and the now-400-years-older Robo in the new forest. Lucca retrieves him from the shrine and fixes him up, and as the party camps for the night, they speculate on the origin of the gates. During the 400 year interval, Robo had been thinking that Lavos may not be the one responsible for their appearance. To him, it seemed almost as if some entity wanted to relive its past and send the party to important moments in history and in their lives.

When asked if there's a moment she'd like to go back to, Lucca remembers something but chooses not to share. During the night, she wakes up, and finds an unusual gate next to the campsite. It takes her 10 years back in time, to the moment when her mother's legs had been permanently injured by a malfunction in one of Taban's machines. Lucca is able to deactivate the machine, preventing the accident from happening.

Following a line of rumors from Toma the adventurer, the party explores a cave in the middle ages called Giant's Claw, where the legendary Rainbow Shell is said to be. Inside, they're surprised to find ancient dinosaurs still living, and it becomes clear that the cave is the ruins of the Tyrano Lair. After fighting a possible descendent of Azala's Black Tyrano, they find the Rainbow Shell, which is too heavy to carry out. They call in a favor from the king and queen, and soldiers are sent to the cave to carry out the shell and keep it safe in Guardia castle.

Back in the present, Marle finds that her father has been put on trial by the Chancellor for allegedly selling the Rainbow Shell. With tensions at the castle running high, Marle rushes to the castle's treasury, which is mysteriously being guarded by monsters, to gather evidence that the Rainbow Shell is still safely held there. Taking a fragment of it back to the courtroom proves the king's innocence, but the Chancellor isn't ready to give up, revealing his true form as Yakra XIII, trying to take revenge on behalf of his ancestors. After Yakra is defeated, Marle and King Guardia realize that the false Chancellor was the one driving the wedge between them the entire time, and are able to resolve their differences. Melchior shows up and is able to make some equipment from the Rainbow Shell, as well as the remaining energy in the Sun Stone.
