Chrono Trigger Walkthrough - Part 103
I don't really know what patterns he uses when one of two arms is still alive, but I do know that if both arms are gone, he always uses the same attacks in the same order, that is:
Laser Beams (massive damage) - Obstacle (damage + Chaos) - Shadow Slay (damage + poison) - Flame Battle (dinky fire-based attack) - Shadow Doom Blaze (sick damage, even higher than Laser Beams) - Evil Emination (attack power up) and I think that's when he starts over, though I'm not quite sure if I missed an element of that attack chain or if it goes on past Evil Emination. The fact of the matter is that through Evil Emination, Lavos' attacks will become stronger and stronger and that is why you should defeat him quickly. We do so and... that STILL wasn't the final fight. The Lavos Core is revealed, a humanoid, fish/Alien-like creature which is the root of all evil if you will. Now, THIS is the REAL final fight of the game and if you've had little problems with the "real" Lavos, chances are you won't have too much trouble with the Lavos Core either. In this fight, the producers pulled one last masterpiece of a mind trick: Lavos Core fights with two small bits by his side; you would think your main enemy is the fish-like creature, but in fact, the REAL Lavos Core is the bit to the right. =P
Anyway, about the fight: The bits are annoying at best and they only deal small amounts of damage or absorb some MP, nothing too dangerous. The real threat is the fish creature, who can pull out some nasty attacks (which, thankfully, it doesn't because I kill it fast enough). You might wanna look up some of his abilities on the Internet or here on youtube, but for example, he can cast Grand Stone (strongest physical attack), Dreamless (strongest magical attack), Crying Heavens (massive single-target damage, an almost guaranteed instant-kill) and many more. The key to defeating is to take out the left bit (warning: magic heals it) and then the fish creature (the order of these two doesn't matter actually) so the right bit will remove its defense (which is pretty high). Once it does, you're free to hack away at it because it does not attack or counter or do anything while it's alone. Eventually though it will reanimate the left bit and the fish creature so you gotta take care of those again. Since I take out the fish creature fast enough, I have little to no trouble winning this fight, as you will see in the next video.
