EDIT: I should have mentioned - not understanding the 'Dead Zone' is the most likely cause of any strafe-jumping problems. Focus on your mouse hand; snapping far enough out to the side (20ish degrees) and then smoothly pushing out.

In Quake, 'strafe jumping' is pretty much the core mechanic of the game. If you intend on playing this game, it the most important thing to focus on if you're new.

There are many videos out there on this topic already - I'm mainly making this to add to my own library since it's such an essential skill.

Other than that - it is a skill like any other and can be improved with mindful practice.
