CiB Game Boy Theater - Wave Race and Bubble Bobble Part 2 (Episode 27)
The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
First up is - oh my goodness WHAT is that? Full disclosure - we are playing on a Retron 3 for this run (it was already hooked up, so when in Rome...), so the sound will sound a bit more awful than it normally does. You can clearly tell that Wave Race has a not great soundtrack, but the Retron through the capture card... yikes.
Anyway, I don't know what else to say about Wave Race. It's a racing game, I can't figure out where to go due to the camera angle. I can't figure out which water is the 'best' water --- is it the red or the white water? Who knows, who cares, NEXT!
Bubble Bobble Part 2 --- just like the NES versions, this game is pretty fun. I've played BB 1, but never Part 2 - the fact that it is such a big game for Game Boy is very nice. I'm used to Bubble Bobble 1 having a fixed camera - think original Pac-Man - whereas this game has screen scroll. Have to be honest, that's my one negative takeaway for the game. I think the best puzzle games on Game Boy are on, hopefully, one non-scrolling screen. Still, a pretty good time overall. Thanks for watching!
