Clash at Demonhead is the ultimate cult classic game for the NES. It features a large open world with light Metroidvania elements, and is an impressive early entry to the Nintendo's library.

The game was developed by Vic Tokai, a Japanese cable television provider! They made a handful of games for the NES, and Clash at Demonhead was one of their most ambitious.

Also, on Route 42 LEFT if you keep trying to pass the troll he'll eventually give up, but you'll take a bunch of damage. Still, it can be done. I can confirm that all of this is true.
